ABOUT KING GEORGE’S MEDICAL UNIVERSITY, DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY:

The field of psychiatry got its humble start in 1956 as a unit in the Department of Medicine with one Reader and one Lecturer in Neuropsychiatry. A lecturer, a clinical psychologist, a statistician, and two social workers were hired in 1965, and a position of professor of psychiatry was created. The initial 10 inpatient beds were quadrupled, and daily OPDs were added to the existing twice-weekly availability of outpatient treatments. Dr. B. B. Sethi, the late first professor of psychiatry, was appointed in 1966. After another lecturer was hired three years later, post-graduate training for the M. D. in Psychiatry degree began in 1969 with two students.
When a formal separate Department of Psychiatry was established at K. G. Medical College, Lucknow, on March 1, 1971, a new era was starting. The Psychiatry Department moved to its current location in the old Lady Kinniard Hospital in August of 1971. The department was given 50 beds by the state government. With the establishment of the drug addiction treatment and mental retardation facilities in 1976, another significant step was made. This happened at the same time as the department's new building's opening. Every year, the Foundation Day is observed. Every year, a foundation day oration by a prominent figure in the field of mental health is combined with seminars, and an alumni meetup and get-together are held afterwards.
There are currently specialist units for community psychiatry, women's mental health, neuropsychiatry, child psychiatry, drug de-addiction, psycho-sexual & marital difficulties, stress management, and anxiety disorders. Drug therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), biofeedback, psychotherapy, behaviour therapy, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, and music therapy are all available as forms of treatment. The department is equipped with a biochemical lab, an EEG lab, a psychological lab, and facilities for biofeedback and neurofeedback therapy.

The qualifying requirements for admission to KING GEORGE’S MEDICAL UNIVERSITY, DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY are as follows.
• King George's Medical University provides courses in a variety of fields, including MBBS, BDS, B.Sc. (Nursing), and DM/DH. Candidates must have earned at least 50% of their possible points in PCB and English in their 10+2 or equivalent exam.
Despite the fact that 70 seats will be filled through the UP NEET Counselling procedure, admission to MBBS and BDS programmes will be provided based on NEET UG scores. The KGMU Entrance Test is used to determine admission to B.Sc. (Radiotherapy Technology), which is followed by an interview. The institution also administers an admission exam for the DM/DH and B.Sc.
