About the Washington University of Health and Science:

At the end of the 19th century, Venezuela saw ongoing riots. In order to stop the riots, the bishop of Merida, Mgr. da Silva, worked with pastor Frie of the parish of Sta. Rosa to purchase the plantation Scherpenheuvel and establish a seminary there. On January 9, 1898, "El SeminarioInmaculada de Concepción de Scherpenheuvel" was formally inaugurated. Pastor Frie had created the structure. 24 Spanish-speaking students were under the supervision of Dutch teachers. There was a serious lack of communication, but father Radulphus helped by helping the Dutch academics learn Spanish, which helped. Due to a lack of funding, the seminary had to be closed on August 27th, 1901.

Up until July 31st, 1974, Scherpenheuvel served as both an orphanage and a technical and vocational school and training institution. The orphanage closed down and all of the career training departments were transferred to other locations or sold to the private sector at that time due to a lack of funding from the government. The founders of Tilburg lived at Huize Scherpenheuvel until 1995, when they gave the land to the people of Curacao and left for Holland. Up until 2008, it served as the Roman Catholic School Board's headquarters.

The designated organisation for preserving and protecting these sites is St. Thomas College Foundation. The St. Martinus University Faculty of Medicine moved into the "Home on the Sharp Hill," also known as Huize Scherpenheuvel, on May 9. After months of repair and remodeling, St. Martinus University finally opened its doors in this majestic structure on October 12th.
