About COTTON UNIVERSITY:

In Assam, Cotton University is one of the top universities. The institution was founded in 1901 by Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, the Chief Commissioner of the former British state of Assam, and was formerly known as Cotton College. In 1948, it was admitted as one of Gauhati University's constituent colleges. The institution served as the focal point of the state's literary and cultural activities, as well as the liberation movement, which solidified Assam's place in India. A Government of Assam Act created the Cotton College State University in 2011, and included the college as a component. The Cotton University Act, 2017, which made it possible for Cotton College State University and Cotton College to be combined, allowed Cotton University to be established in 2017.

Assam was the only province without a college, and Guwahati was the most accessible for the people, therefore Manick Chandra Baruah addressed a letter to the British administration in 1899 requesting that a college be established there. In response, the Chief Commissioner of Assam at the time, Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, K.C.S.I., said on November 3, 1899, that a college would be established in Guwahati. Cotton personally launched the Cotton College on May 27, 1901, using the name that the public had chosen. It was connected to the University of Calcutta. 39 students and five teachers, among them Frederick William Sudmersen, the college's first president, were present when it opened.

COTTON UNIVERSITY FACILITIES:

• Currently, Cotton University has three girls' dormitories, NBD hostel, SKL hostel, and DKR hostel, with a total potential of 335 boarders, and five boys' hostels, including RKB hostel, SNBC hostel, MNDP hostel, and SMH hostel with a total capacity of 212 boarders. There are two new boys dorms being built, with a capacity of 120 college students. Modern amenities are available in every hostel.

• The Cotton Institution Library, now known as the Dr. Suryya Kumar Bhuyan Library, was established in 1901, the same year the university was established. In 1909 and 1910, the library could hold about 2000 volumes.
