Hostels have always received inadequate funding from the institution. Private businesses demand high rates and many of them don't provide security assurances. The number of students attending DU's colleges increased by 25% in the previous two years and by 54% in the 2007-2008 academic year. In order to achieve reservation goals and EWS, the institution has pushed for a rise in the number of students admitted. However, Lady Shri Ram student Ujjayini Ray has admitted that the amenities there are subpar. A hostel warden there has even said that students there may feel insecure if men are present.
